NEW YORK (WABC) – Anyone looking for a car has recently known that it can be difficult to find due to supply chain shortages affecting the delivery of new vehicles.

The result? The used car market is hot.

But at the same time, New York City officials are accusing several large borough dealers of deceptive practices that they say are losing thousands of customers.

“I feel used, stolen, betrayed,” said Karinie Olivero, used car customer.

The Bronx mother-of-three refers to her ordeal of buying her first car, a 2017 Grand Cherokee, which she saw listed for sale at a used car dealership in Brooklyn.

She says the price went from $ 36,000 to a total sale of $ 55,442, a difference of over $ 19,000.

“Unscrupulous and predatory dealers put pressure on people, rush them, surprise them,” said Peter Hatch, Commissioner of the Ministry of Consumer and Worker Protection.

Hatch says he will seek to revoke the licenses of two companies operating five dealerships in Queens and Brooklyn on charges of false advertising, misleading consumers about financing, warranties, auto certification and other illegal conduct .

JF Motors, which manages Automania, Luxury Automotive Club and World Auto, now closed, is accused of 9,000 offenses.

The city is seeking compensation of $ 100,000 for nine consumers.

Kings Autoshow, along with two Mitsubishi dealers in Brooklyn, was affected by 7,000 infractions.

The city is seeking compensation of $ 50,000 for 34 consumers.

Olivero said she was misled by her salesperson. She left with a car but without a contract.

Brooklyn Mitsubishi is one of the major dealerships in the Northeast and is currently run by a dynamic GM known as El Patronn,

He left the dealership for many years in 2018 and told 7 On Your Side, “All of these things were happening before I got involved.”

He added that he was “cleaning the house” and “Brooklyn Mitsubishi is a brand new dealership.”

The Queens dealers did not return our appeals, but the city commissioner said both dealers would have an opportunity to respond to the allegations in court.

The big takeaway:

-Any dealership customer who believes they have suffered financial loss must file a complaint by calling 311.

-Remember, by law, when closing a car you must see and sign a Consumer Bill of Rights and get two other documents including a Funding Disclosure Form which must show you the APR on lowest offered by any finance company for a loan of the same term with your number of payments and down payment all stated.

– Additionally, consumers must have a contract cancellation option, which means you can cancel within two business days to have time to review your contract and any financing agreements outside of the dealership.
